Punia will now compete in the bronze medal match on Thursday (August 5) evening. Punia, silver medallist at the 2019 world championships, was staring at an early exit but the 22-year-old managed a two-point takedown in the final 10 seconds of his bout against the Chinese to keep his Tokyo medal hopes alive.

The fourth-seeded Dahiya consistently attacked the right leg of Colombia’s Tigreros Urbano and he remained dominant, apart from conceding a take-down in the first period. Dahiya, the reigning Asian champion, nailed the win with one minute and 10 seconds still remaining in the bout, which was stopped after he raced to a winning 13-2 lead.

All three are part of a national camp at the SAI Centre in Sonepat ahead of which the wrestlers are in quarantine.

Vinesh Phogat, Bajrang Punia, Ravi Kumar and Rahul Aware were the four wrestlers who ended up with the bronze medals in the prestigious competition. 

It was a two-point gap that cost Dahiya his semi-final bout against Russian Zaur Uguev, the defending champion who went on to win a second consecutive gold.

He had booked the quota after prevailing 7-6 in a tense semifinal against Colombia`s Carlos Arturo Mendez at the World Wrestling Championships.  

Indian wrestler Deepak Punia has withdrawn from the final of the World Wrestling Championship with an ankle injury. "I am a bit disappointed that I can`t fight for gold but I am happy with my overall performance here. I will work hard and the aim is to win a medal in the Olympics," Deepak said on Sunday.

Indian wrestler Deepak Punia on Saturday became the first athlete of the country to book his place in the final of the 2019 World Wrestling Championships after beating Stefan Reichmuth of Switzerland in the semi-final bout of the men's 86kg category in Nur-Sultan, Kazakhstan.
