According to data from the National Stock Exchange (NSE), DIIs invested a total of Rs 3,54,861.75 crore in Indian equities between January 1 and June 25 this year.
The 30-share Sensex opened higher at 33,206.99 and advanced to hit a high of 33,281.77 in early trade.
The BSE flagship index Sensex jumped over 330 points, or 0.97%, to close at 34,413.16.
The benchmark Sensex falling by another 561 points to close at a one-month low of 34,195.94 amid a meltdown in the world markets.
Continuing with their bullish stance on India for the second month, domestic institutional investors (DIIs) pumped in more than Rs 4,500 crore in equity markets in May.
In terms of retail shareholders by numbers, the Reliance Group took the lead.
DII ownership on a free-float basis or on the basis of non-promoter holdings in NSE firms, climbed to 11.46% in the quarter ending March 2015 from 10.64% one year back.
