England skipper Joe Root became only the 10th batsman to score a century in his 100th Test match as his unbeaten 128 put the visitors in strong position at 263/3 against India after Day One of the first Test in Chennai on Friday. Root put on 200 runs for the third wicket with opener Dominic Sibley, who was dismissed in the final over of day's play for 87. Jasprit Bumrah, playing his first Test at home after 17 Tests, picked up two wickets including that of Sibley to give some cheer to India. In the process, Root became the 10th batsman to score a century in his 100th Test and the third Englishman after Colin Cowdrey and Alec Stewart.
Root followed up scores of 228 and 186 against Sri Lanka in the last two Tests with his chanceless century against India in this his 100th Test.
England lost their third wicket in the last over of the opening day’s play with Jasprit Bumrah trapping Sibley in front with a searing yorker.
Before the start of the 42nd over of the visitors' innings, umpire Michael Gough was seen unwrapping a tissue and he subsequently rubbed it on both sides of the ball.
