Ecuador's Guayas region was shaken by five earthquakes one after the other. The intensity of the earthquake was measured at 6.8. So far 12 people have died. Many buildings have been damaged.

At least 44 homes were destroyed, while 90 more were damaged after an earthquake of magnitude 6.8 hit the coastal region of Ecuador and northern Peru.

Nearly 650 people are now known to have died in the strong earthquake that hit Ecuador one week ago, President Rafael Correa said today, as the toll jumped yet higher.

A magnitude 6.0 aftershock struck near the coast of Ecuador Thursday, as the country struggled to recover from a devastating quake that killed almost 600 people, US experts said.

At least 2,068 people were also injured in Saturday's 7.8 magnitude quake, which ripped apart buildings and roads and knocked out power.

The President confirmed 272 deaths and 2,068 injured and said he feared those figures would increase.

 The toll from the big earthquake in Ecuador rose on Sunday to 246 dead and 2,527 people injured.
