The Canary Islands' first volcanic eruption in 50 years has forced the evacuation of about 5,000 people, including around 500 tourists, and destroyed about 100 houses, officials said on Monday.

The scientists filmed the volcanic event by chance while aboard research vessel "Investigator" studying the fringe of Antarctica`s Heard Island.

Monday's eruption marked the first time Mt. Aso had erupted since October 23, with the latest eruption sending plumes of smoke about 700 metres above the first crater of Mt. Nakadake, which is one of the five peaks comprising the volcano.
