With billions of rupees expected to be exchanged during the Mahakumbh, authorities are investigating whether the counterfeit currency operation was aimed at infiltrating the event's financial activities.

A 23-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly supplying counterfeit currency notes in and around Delhi, police said on Wednesday. 

Two accused have been charged with smuggling and circulation of fake currency notes across the country with a view to damage the monetary stability of India.

The Uttar Pradesh police was on Saturday thrown into a tizzy after a man claimed a new currency note of Rs 2,000 denomination, he withdrew form a State Bank of India (SBI) ATM, started to lose its pink colour.

What could be termed of the biggest cache of fake Indian currency notes seized so far, the Special Cell of Delhi Police busted a racket and seized Rs 18 lakh fake currency in new notes.

Concerned over circulation of fake currency in the country, Finance Ministry today asked the Reserve Bank to set up a special cell to monitor such notes.

The notes, reportedly, printed in the 5AG and 3AP series, amount to Rs 30 thousand crore.

According to the website of US department of the treasury, the present denominations of the currency in production are Dollar 1, Dollar 2, Dollar 5, Dollar 10, Dollar 20, Dollar 50 and Dollar 100.

The cash deposited by customers should also carry the account number of the depositor.
