Elon Musk-founded private spaceflight company SpaceX on Sunday successfully landed the first stage of its Falcon 9 rocket on land after delivering an Argentinian earth-observation satellite from the Vandenberg Air Force Base in California.

The "Block 5" booster, the final substantial upgrade to SpaceX`s Falcon 9 launch vehicle, was launched at 4.14 p.m. from NASA`s Kennedy Space Centre, starting its maiden flight, Xinhua reported.

The satellite weighs six tonnes and is almost the size of a city bus, making it the largest geostationary satellite that SpaceX has taken into space.

As the fire from the rocket's base began to enter the frame, the feed was momentarily cut-off, but came on again, showing the rocket standing on the ship with its bottom part still on fire.

The satellite was deployed to a geostationary transfer orbit about 36 minutes after liftoff. 

The satellite is designed to last for five years, and will orbit the Earth once every 100 minutes.

  SpaceX is poised to launch an unmanned cargo ship toward the International Space Station Monday, including a super-computer that could direct astronauts on future deep-space missions.

The payloads include crucial materials to directly support dozens of the more than 250 science and research investigations that will occur during Expeditions 52 and 53.

This launch marked the second time that SpaceX has reflown a Falcon 9 first stage, after the March launch of the SES-10 satellite.
