Ben Winston directed the special and executive produced along with "Friends" executive producers Kevin Bright, Marta Kauffman, and David Crane. The special was delayed multiple times due to the production shutdown caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. "Friends: The Reunion" comes from Warner Bros Unscripted Television in association with Warner Horizon, Fulwell 73 Productions, and Bright/Kauffman/Crane Productions.

The show will star Courtney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Jennifer Anniston, Matt Le Blanc and Matthew Perry, besides Schwimmer. During the chat Schwimmer ruled out the possibility of the reunion being hosted by Ellen DeGeneres or Billy Crystal. Shoot for the reunion of the iconic show was supposed to happen last year, but the pandemic forced the unit to take a break.
