An extinct species of monitor lizard had four eyes, a first among known jawed vertebrates, a fossil study has found.

Both the new frogs, scientifically listed as D kubricki and D kamagarini, are characterised by a bright orange blotch on the shanks, reminiscent of the 'orange pieces of nature'.

The study found that small horned frogs, with head width of about 4.5 centimetre (cm), can bite with a force of 30 newtons (N) or about three kilogrammes (kg).

This industrial township, surrounded by cultivable agricultural land, harbours 97 small and 57 heavy engineering and manufacturing establishments.

The exciting discovery was made by scientists at the Bernardino Rivadavia Natural Sciences Museum in Buenos Aires while studying the pigment of polka-dot tree frogs, a species common to the rainforest.

Most vertebrates, including humans, have two types of visual cells located in the retina, namely cones and rods. 

According to a report published on Tuesday, the newly discovered species that are small enough to sit on a fingernail were there in abundance but had likely been overlooked because of their size.

Before the frogs are officially recognised as two separate species, researchers will test if individual frogs from the two groups have unique physical or behavioral features and if they can produce healthy offspring.

The frogs live only in Lake Titicaca, South America`s largest lake, and its tributaries.
