The 1957 Lok Sabha election was the first one to be held after the enactment of the States Reorganisation Act, 1956 under which states were reorganised and new boundaries were drawn along linguistic lines. It was also the last election where voting was held in multi-seat constituencies.

Despite numerous - and sporadic - grievances against the Indian National Congress at the time, the party remained the biggest political force to reckon with - made even more powerful due to the lack of a credible and worthy opponent. The outcome of the Lok Sabha election 1957 proved that Nehru's reign was here to stay.
