In a major hopeful boost to the dwindling India growth story, the report stated that among the emerging markets that were seen to have great potential in the early 2000s, Brazil and Turkey have lost much of what they had gained before 2013, while China, India and Indonesia continue to grow strong.
On the list of 137 economies, Switzerland is followed by the US and Singapore in second and third places, respectively.
The jump of 16 places for India from last year's 55th place is the highest for any economy this year. India is also the second-most competitive among BRICS nations behind neighbouring China, which is ranked at the 28th position.
In a big jump, India has moved up 16 positions to rank 55th on a global index of the world's most competitive economies, where Switzerland remains on top.
India is among the worst- ranked countries when it comes to taxation and inflation burden on economy, as also in terms of the negative impact of crime, terrorism and health hazards on business environment, a WEF report said on Wednesday.
