The statement by the Union Minister of Women and Child Development, Smriti Zubin Irani comes as a written reply in Lok Sabha on Friday.
"Global Hunger Index (GHI) does not reflect India`s true picture as it is a flawed measure of `Hunger`. It should not be taken at face value as it is neither appropriate nor representative of hunger prevalent in a country," Irani said.
The Ministry of Women and Child Development said that the methodology used by FAO is “unscientific” and claimed that there was no methodology to measure undernourishment.
India has slipped to 101st position in the Global Hunger Index (GHI) 2021.
India is behind its neighbours Pakistan, Bangladesh and Nepal.
India ranks 94 in Global Hunger Index
It has been placed in the 'serious' hunger category
Last year, India's rank was 102 out of 117 countries.
The Welthungerhilfe and Concern Worldwide says India is among the 45 countries that have "serious levels of hunger".
As per the report, the rankings were based on four indicators: undernourishment, child mortality, child wasting, and child stunting.
At 31.4, India's 2017 Global Hunger Index score is at the high end of the 'serious' category.

The report by the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) ranked India 97 among 118 countries.
India has made some progress in reducing poverty level, but still ranks behind neighbouring Nepal and Sri Lanka on the Global Hunger Index and its hunger status remains classified as "serious".
