It is reportedly estimated that commercial vehicles, which constitute about 5% of the total vehicle fleet, contribute about 65-70% of total vehicular pollution. The older fleet, typically manufactured before the year 2000 constitute less than 1% of the total fleet but contributes around 15% of total vehicular pollution. These older vehicles pollute 10-25 times more than modern vehicles.

Under the scheme, those vehicles that are registered outside the state will have to pay 'Green Tax' for plying within the city limits. The proposal for levying tax has been sent to the state government for approval. 

A 14.5 percent 'fat tax' on burgers, pizzas and other junk food and a Green tax for vehicles over 10 years have been proposed in Kerala's CPI(M)- led Left Front government's maiden budget on Friday that also provided for a Rs 12,000 crore 'anti-slowdown package' for taking up developmental works.

The Supreme Court on Wednesday announced a slew of measures to tackle the growing menace of air pollution in Delhi.

The interim ban on registration of diesel-run luxury cars will also be implemented in the National Capital Region, PTI reported.

The Supreme Court yesterday said that the rich can't be allowed to keep on driving diesel-driven SUVs that pollute the environment.

As another interim measure, the court is also mulling to ban registration of all new SUVs and diesel cars above 2000 cc engine capacity in Delhi.

The toll tax contractor of South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) has been collecting around Rs 1.25 crore of Environment Compensation Charge (ECC) every day since the 'green tax' was levied on trucks and other commercial vehicles entering Delhi as per a Supreme Court order.

SDMC is nodal agency to collect toll tax on behalf of all the three municipal corporations in Delhi.
