London mayor Sadiq Khan called on May to replace the council with independent commissioners after the leader of the council, Nick Paget-Brown, and his deputy, Rock Feilding- Mellen, both announced on Friday that they would be stepping down over "perceived failings" by the council after the fire on June 14 that claimed at least 80 lives and displaced hundreds.

The estates evacuated were found to have cladding similar to Grenfell Tower, which Scotland Yard confirmed as a factor for the fire spreading rapidly through the 24-storey building after a fridge-freezer burst in one of the flats.  

Late on Friday nearly 4,000 residents were forced to leave five tower blocks in north London after firefighters said it was unsafe for them to stay.

On Friday angry protesters chanting "We want justice" stormed their way into the Kensington and Chelsea town hall to try to confront the leaders of the local council.

Six victims had been provisionally identified. Metropolitan Police Commander Stuart Cundy said there was a "risk" that investigators would "not be able to identify everybody".  

The death toll in the devastating fire that engulfed the 24-storey residential block in London rose to 17 on Thursday.

The tower was home to about 600 residents and had only one stairway through which people could escape.
