Congress leader and Rajya Sabha MP P Chidambaram on Friday (november 19, 2021) said that the decision of the Centre to repeal the three farm laws is not due to a change in the policy or heart but by the fear of impending elections.

On Guru Nanak Jayanti, Prime Minister Narendra Modi appealed to farmers who had set up camp at entry points into the national capital since November 28 last year to return home. 

Thousands of farmers had been camping at Delhi border points since November last demanding a repeal of three farm laws — the Farmers' Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act, 2020; the Farmers Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and Farm Services Act 2020; and the Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act, 2020. 

Soon after the Prime Minister made the announcement, people started celebrating at the Ghazipur border with 'Jalebis'. Several farmers present at the Ghazipur border were seen shouting slogans and enjoying 'Jalebis' while hailing the PM’s announcement. 

The PM insisted that the laws were introduced for the benefit of farmers and then apologised to the people of the country while adding that the government could not convince a section of farmers despite its clear heart and a clean conscience.

Gurupurab or Guru Nanak Dev Jayanti is on November 19 this year. The first Sikh Guru's birthday is widely celebrated across the globe. Devotees partake in preparations days ahead of the special day.

The BKU leader said that the decision to call off the stir will be taken only after the contentious legislations are repealed in Parliament. He also stressed that the government should talk to farmers over the issue of minimum support price (MSP) of crops and other matters.  

PM Modi said that the three laws were brought for the benefit of farmers but "we couldn't convince a section of farmers despite best efforts". The goal of the three farm laws was to empower farmers, especially small farmers, he said.
