A recent IARC study reveals that India accounts for over 83,400 of the global oral cancer cases linked to smokeless tobacco products and areca nut, emphasizing the urgent need for preventive measures.

The Finance Bill, 2024, introduced amendments to the Central GST Act, where a penalty of Rs 1 lakh would be levied for every machine OF tobacco products not registered with the GST authorities.

The High Court had directed the CBI to conduct the investigation into all aspects of the offence of alleged illegal manufacture, import, supply, distribution and sale of gutka, chewable tobacco which are banned in Tamil Nadu and the Union Territory of Puducherry.

After tightening the noose on illegal slaughterhouses, Chief Minister Yogi Adityantah on Wednesday ordered banning of pan masala, gutka in all government offices in Uttar Pradesh.

According to the notification, unpackaged products of chewable tobacco, too, are covered under the ambit of the ban. 

In June, the ministry announced that the ban on emerging tobacco products would be implemented in two phases.

The Budget for 2014-15 Thursday left income tax rates unchanged but provided sops to small and marginal assesses by raising the threshold exemption limit from Rs 2 lakh to Rs 2.5 lakh and investments under 80C by Rs 50,000 to Rs 1.5 lakh while promising not to bring tax changes with retrospective effect.
