Former Prime Minister and JD(S)' chief HD Deve Gowda, Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge and BJP leaders Ashok Gasti and Irana Kadadi were on Friday elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha from Karnataka.

H D Deve Gowda said that his concern is to build and strengthen the party in the region. He had declared earlier that he will not be contesting elections. 

The by-election in Karnataka will be held on October 21 in 15 constituencies.

The JDS leader said that he was uncertain about how long the coalition government would last in the southern state.

HD Deve Gowda and then IK Gujral are largely known as PMs who were unable to tame the ruckus of coalition politics between the years of 1996 and 1998. It eventually resulted in snap election in which most contesting parties fancied themselves as winners.

Lok Sabha election of 1996 was a three-way contest between Congress, BJP and several regional powers which had come together to project a third alternative. The highest number of candidates ever competed in these elections.

Deve Gowda said his opponents accused him of indulging in family politics but his rise in politics was possible because of God and voters, whom his family served to the best of its ability.
