Goa's anti-corruption ombudsman, the Lokayukta, has been non-functional for six months, leaving 20 anti-corruption cases in limbo.   

Appointment of judges in HCs: The Collegium in its meeting approved the proposal for the elevation of Judicial Officers -- Ramachandra Dattatray Huddar and Venkatesh Naik Thavaryanaik as judges in the Karnataka High Court.

The government set a record by appointing 138 judges in various High Courts across the country in the year 2022 and surpassed the previous record of 126 High Court appointments in 2016.

Separate notifications issued by the Law Ministry said nine additional judges -- five in Karnataka, one in Patna and three in Madras high courts -- have been appointed.

The Centre on Friday informed the Supreme Court that it has returned over half the names recommended to it for appointment as high court judges by the collegium of judges headed by the Chief Justice of India (CJI).

During the period 2009-2014, only 20 new posts of high courts judges had been created, whereas during 2015 and 2016, 173 new posts were created.

As on July 1, the high courts were facing a shortage of 470 judges, with the Allahabad High Court having the maximum vacancies at 82.
