According to official data, there are four cases pending since 1954 and nine since 1955 in high courts.

In the wake of Unnao and Hyderabad rape and murder cases that shook the entire nation, the Centre has taken a pathbreaking decision. Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad has written to all the Chief Justices of all High Courts in the country directing them to complete all cases of rape and those registered under the provisions of Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act within six months.

 At a time when there is no mechanism in place to appoint or elevate judges to the higher judiciary, 8 High Court judges have retired in a month, raising the vacancies from 384 in August to 392 this month.
