Preclinical experiments by researchers at University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) in the US suggest the cancer drugs vorinostat, belinostat and panobinostat might help treat HPVs.

HPV is the most common sexually transmitted infection and it is a major cause of genital warts and cancers of the genitals, mouth and throat.   

The researchers analysed data from 13,089 people, aged 20-69, taking part in the US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) who had been tested for oral HPV infection.

The sexually transmitted human papillomavirus, or HPV, infections cause global disease, including an estimated 266,000 deaths from cervical cancer worldwide in 2012, according to the World Health Organisation.  

As per the report, experts have warned that a huge number of the population is at risk of being infected with human papilloma virus (HPV).

The main factors that increase the risk of head and neck cancers are smoking and alcohol consumption.

India represents 26.4 percent of all women dying of cervical cancer globally.
