Hurricane Joaquin News
US crews have said they were calling off their hunt for the data recorder of the doomed "El Faro" freighter.
As the powerful Hurricane Joaquin was slamming the Bahamas, NASA astronaut Scott Kelly captured a stunning photo of the storm on Friday morning from the International Space Station (ISS).
Yesterday, the Coast Guard said it located an orange life ring from the missing cargo ship.
Joaquin, powerful Category Four storm, brought record-setting rain to the southeastern US after devastating parts the Bahamas and threatening to do much the same to Bermuda.
The Coast Guard said the 224-metre ship named El Faro had taken on water and was listing at 15 degrees near Crooked Island, one of the islands most battered by the hurricane. Officials said the crew includes 31 US citizens and two from Poland.
Hurricane Joaquin barreled through the Bahamas as an extremely dangerous Category Four storm, while jittery residents in the eastern United States battened down ahead of its anticipated arrival.
Hurricane Joaquin intensified as it approached the small, sparsely populated islands of the eastern Bahamas on a projected track that would take it near the US East Coast early next week.
