Elon Musk, who heads SpaceX and Tesla, proposed the idea of Hyperloop to the world in 2013 through a whitepaper - "Hyperloop Alpha".

India’s first Hyperloop test track stretches up to 410 meters. It is located in IIT-M campus in Tamil Nadu’s Thaiyur.

Hyperloop claims that this new technology can give tough competition to commercial jets, in terms of travel time, and surprisingly without any direct emissions. The route estimator on Hyperloop's website showed that the distance from Delhi to Mumbai, which is around 1153 km, can be covered in 1 hour and 22 minutes. Virgin Hyperloop pods will further use magnetic levitation and propulsion technology to increase their speeds.

Maharashtra government has reportedly deemed hyperloop a public infrastructure project, setting it up to be the first hyperloop project in the world. 

The team will now battle it out with 20 other finalists from across the globe on July 21.

Hyperloop is working on a technology that would use magnetic levitation in low-pressure tubes to transport people and goods at superfast speeds.

Hyperloop One sees India as among the top three markets for its super-fast transportation solution and is ready to invest "billions of dollars" in the country, CEO Rob Llyod said.

Hyperloop runs faster than an aircraft at a speed of 1,120 kmph.
