Replying to the discussion on the Bill, Rai, Minister of State for Home Affairs, attacked the previous Congress government and the TMC dispensation in West Bengal for "aiding" illegal immigrants enter the country and "facilitating" their stay by including their names in voters' list and ration cards.
The Home Minister clarified that the government will keep a close watch on those who pose a threat to the security of India.
Replying to a Lok Sabha debate on the Immigration and Foreigners Bill, 2025, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said that the legislation will strengthen the country's security, and boost the economy and business, besides encouraging the health and education sectors.
A significant change in the proposed immigration legislation places the responsibility of proving legal status on the individual rather than the state.
