The Centre has advised the states and UTs to constantly vigil over coronavirus cases.

The current rise in Covid cases is being driven by XBB.1.16, which is a sub-variant of Omicron. 

Top health experts say that the XBB 1.16 Covid-19 variant is believed to be highly contagious and more virulent than the previous strains of the virus.

Amid rising Covid-19 cases, a nationwide mock drill to take stock of hospital preparedness will be held from Monday in which both public and private facilities are expected to participate.

Covid infections in the country have seen an upward trend in the past few days, with the daily fresh infections at 2,994 on April 1, 3,824 on April 2, 3,641 on April 3, 3,038 on April 4, 4,435 on April 5, 5,335 on April 6 and 6,050 on April 7 and 6155 on April 8. 

In the last 24 hours, 5,357 new cases of corona virus have been reported. At the same time, the number of active cases has reached 32,814. During this, 10 people have died of Kovid. 3 died in Gujarat, 2 in Himachal Pradesh and one each in Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra, Odisha and Uttar Pradesh.

 Amid a nationwide upward trend in the Covid-19 cases, Union Health Minister Dr Mansukh Mandaviya will chair a review meeting with the health ministers of all states and Union Territories on Friday afternoon.

Corona cases have increased again in the country and on Tuesday more than 1500 cases were reported in 24 hours. The number of active corona infected across the country has crossed 10,000.

Earlier, it was announced that Delhi government school teachers would be deployed at the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport to ensure people there follow Covid-appropriate protocols. The order was issued by the District Magistrate (West) on behalf of the District Disaster Management Authority.

Covid surge in China's Sichuan: The Sichuan Center for Disease Control and Prevention said the true percentage of infected people was likely higher, since nearly 30 per cent of those who did not undergo any tests complained of symptoms such as fever and cough, according to NHK World.
