The EAM said, the "approach to creating connectivity to and within Assam, beyond to the North-East, then to neighbouring Myanmar and Bangladesh..." India is working on a number of connectivity projects to connect northeast with East Asia.

India sees the Indo-Pacific as a "seamless interface" of the Indian and Pacific Oceans from the western coast of North America to the eastern shores of Africa. Over 50 per cent of global trade traverses this maritime domain which is also home to over 60% of the world’s population and the global GDP.

India and Japan sign agreement that aims to increase cooperation in 5G, Artificial intelligence (AI), and submarine cable network. The current agreement is seen as signifying the increased level of trust between the two countries.

The defence ministers of India and Japan on Tuesday discussed the aggressive actions by China in the region. They also called for increasing cooperation in the maritime domain.

In 5G sector, India and Japan discussed wireless planning and standardization of technology. Earlier this year, both the countries finalized the text of the cybersecurity pact that promotes cooperation in areas such as 5G, IoT, AI.

India, Japan engage via "act east forum" which is chaired by foreign secretary of India and Japanese envoy to Delhi. It coordinates Japanese investment in India's northeast and the wider region increasing connectivity to Bangladesh and Myanmar. Both countries already have a partnership in third world countries for infrastructure and project development.

EAM S Jaishankar has called for expansion of the partnership between India and Japan for projects in a third country to Russia's far east and Pacific Island countries. Speaking at a FICCI virtual event, he said, "One is the possibility of economic cooperation in Russian far east..." "...India has shown much greater willingness to be involved in economic projects there and the other is Pacific Island countries...," the EAM said.

A joint statement in this regard was made during the inaugural meeting of the India-Japan Foreign and Defence Ministerial Dialogue (2+2). 

Taking to microblogging site Twitter, PM Modi said, "Delighted to meet PM Abe Shinzo in Vladivostok. We had in-depth discussions on a wide range of subjects, particularly bettering trade and cultural relations between our nations. Our countries are also working together on various global forums to create a better planet."

Japan on Monday backed India's membership bid to join the elite Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG), which is opposed by China.
