In the race to become the next Indian cricket coach, veteran Mumbai cricketer Ravi Shastri emerged victorious as he edged past some of the biggest names in world cricket. The Mumbai veteran, who was snubbed at the last moment for the same role last year, once again decided to throw his hat into the ring days after Anil Kumble stepped down as coach.

The announcement of the coach came late on Tuesday after much drama. Initially there were reports in the media which claimed the selection of Shastri which was followed by the BCCI squashing the news, only for the board to backtrack and confirm him as a coach later in the night.

After weeks of high drama, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) finally appointed former Indian cricketer Ravi Shastri as the head coach of the Indian team on Tuesday.

Ravi Shastri was named as the head coach of the Indian team by BCCI on Tuesday night while Zaheer Khan was named as the bowling coach.

BCCI acting secretary Amitabh Chaudhary has clarified that the Indian board has had no official confirmation about the next Indian cricket coach and the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) is still deliberating over the decision.

Ravi Shastri, who was snubbed for the top job in Indian cricket last year, was finally announced as Anil Kumble's replacement after weeks of drama over the coach selection process for the Indian team.

Vinod Rai's statement came as a shock for the Indian fans as Sourav Ganguly on Monday said that the final decision will be taken after Cricket Advisory Commitee (CAC) discusses the matter with Indian skipper Virat Kohli.

Despite interviewing five candidates in a meeting which went for hours, the legendary troika of Sourav Ganguly, Sachin Tendulkar and VVS Laxman failed to come to a final conclusion.

The Indian cricket team is without a coach since the conclusion of ICC Champions Trophy after Anil Kumble's contract came to an end. 

Ganguly, who along with Sachin Tendulkar and VVS Laxman interviewed five candidates for the high-profile job, said that the panel wanted to talk to Virat Kohli before coming to the final decision.

Irrespective of who gets the job, it will big shoes to will considering the team did well under Anil Kumble.

Rajput has delivered as a coach at various levels in the game and it will be foolhardy to not consider his application in all seriousness. 

Simmons, under whose guidance Windies won a World Twenty20 title, has expressed his interest in coaching the Indian team.

When asked about his choice for India's next coach, Kohli said that he will give his opinion only if asked for it by the BCCI.

Prasad, who is currently working as the junior national chief selector, however refused to confirm the development.

Speaking on the topic for the first time since Kumble's resignation, Kohli said that he had a lot of respect for Kumble, but would not discuss what happened in the dressing room to maintain its sanctity.

The BCCI Chief Executive Officer Rahul Johri will seek a detailed report from Indian team's administrative manager Kapil Malhotra on the Anil Kumble-Virat Kohli fiasco after the chief coach decided to quit.

While the cricket fraternity wants Kumble to get a bigger role, fans have slammed Kohli with few even asking for his sacking as captain.
