The Indian Sugar Mills Association (ISMA) in July had projected a production of 35 MT in the 2018-19 season that started this month, taking into account higher cane acreage and forecast of normal monsoon.

Country's sugar production is estimated to decline by over 9 percent to 256 lakh tonnes in the current marketing year ending September on account of lower sugarcane output.

India's sugar production is estimated to touch all time high of 28.3 million tonnes (MT) in the ongoing marketing year, 2014-15, as mills have already manufactured 27.95 MT so far.

India's sugar production rose by 47 percent to 42.25 lakh tonnes till December 15 of this marketing year, which started in October this year, leading to a fall in ex-factory prices of the sweetener.

Rejecting the demand to hike import duty on sugar to 40 percent, the Finance Ministry on Friday said the levy will be retained at the existing level of 15 percent.
