INSACOG News
Covid scare in India: The INSACOG reports genomic surveillance of SARS-CoV-2 across the country through sequencing of samples from sentinel sites and international passengers arriving in India. Amid a rise in COVID-19 cases in some countries, India has stepped up surveillance.
INSACOG has said that one confirmed case of XE variant has been detected in India
It, however, said that there are no reports of XE clusters across India
Its bulletin said that 12 states have shown an increase in cases, while 19 states have shown a decline
XE is a BA.1/BA.2 recombinant, with the majority of the genome including the S gene belonging to BA.2, said report.
XE shows slightly higher transmission rate.
XE also shows a higher growth rate above that of BA.2; however, this finding requires further confirmation, report added.
BA.2 lineage, sub-variant of Omicron, has been found in a substantial fraction in India.
Most Omicron cases so far have been asymptomatic or mild.
INSACOG said genomic surveillance is key for early detection of Omicron variant.
COVID booster dose is being demanded among Omicron threat.
India has so far reported two cases of Omicron.
