WhatsApp shows the last seen of users at the top of the conversation. Last seen basically shows when the user was last active on WhatsApp. Users will be given a new "My Contacts Except..." option.

Android users could also be able to transfer chat history to iOS phones. News of the migration feature comes as WhatsApp is beta testing multi-device support. WhatsApp is developing a way of transferring them between different phone numbers.

Instant messaging service provider Flock on Wednesday launched a new app "Mailcast" that integrates mailing list functionality directly into Flock.

Yahoo is up against some well-established rivals such as WhatsApp, Snapchat, iMessenger and Facebook Messenger.

RIL's telecom arm Reliance Jio Infocomm has launched its own instant messaging and calling application 'Jio Chat'.

The app is said to be in the early stages of development and is likely to be launched by 2015.

Facebook said the acquisition is subject to customary closing conditions, including regulatory approvals, and is expected to close in the second half of 2014.
