Earlier this week, Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned as Vice President of India “to prioritise health care and abide by medical advice.” His resignation, timed with the beginning of Parliament’s Monsoon Session, has raised questions and prompted speculation among Opposition leaders. 

Union Home Minister Amit Shah, along with JP Nadda and Kiren Rijiju, met Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla amid speculation about whether Dhankhar admitted the Opposition-sponsored impeachment notice in the Rajya Sabha.

A video has surfaced online following Jagdeep Dhankhar’s resignation as Vice President of India on Monday, in which he is seen discussing his retirement. Meanwhile, President Droupadi Murmu has accepted his resignation.

Jagdeep Dhankhar, who had been serving as the 14th Vice President of India since August 2022, tendered his resignation on July 21, citing health concerns. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Tuesday, in a post on X, said that Dhankhar has served the country in various capacities and wished him good health.

A native of Rajasthan, Dhankhar rose to become the second-highest constitutional authority in India. His abrupt departure during the ongoing Monsoon Session has raised crucial questions about the leadership and functioning of the Rajya Sabha.

Jagdeep Dhankhar, a seasoned lawyer and political figure, served as the 14th Vice President of India from 2022 until his resignation on July 21 2025. He resigned from the post of Vice President on health grounds on Monday.
