During his playing career with New Zealand, Patel has appeared in a total of 24 Tests and 43 One-Day Internationals (ODIs), bagging 65 and 49 wickets, respectively.

Earlier, wicket-keeper batsman Ronchi announced his retirement.

Throwing his weight behind Jeetan Patel's inclusion, selector Gavin Larsen said Patel provided the balance the team needed along side Mitchell Santner, the left-arm spin option.

Reflecting on Patel`s inclusion, national selector Gavin Larsen said the former brings a huge amount of experience to the team and gives the side the required balance.

India were 239/7 in 86 overs at stumps on Day I of the second Test at the Eden Gardens here on Friday. Patel took 2/66 in 21 overs to contribute to his team`s cause.

Craig, who claimed two wickets in Kanpur, will return home to undergo a rehabilitation programme and will require four weeks to recover, according to New Zealand coach Mike Hesson.
