A separate military campaign in Rakhine state, which has forced 655,000 Rohingya Muslims over the border into Bangladesh, has dominated global attention.

Official sources said that the leader of the Nationalist Socialist Council of Nagaland (Khaplang) who had been ailing for quite sometime, died following a cardiac arrest.

Up to 15,000 people may have fled across Myanmar`s border into China in the past month, a United Nations agency has said, as fighting between Myanmar`s Army and ethnic armed groups intensifies.

Leaders of Myanmar rebel armies held talks in a war-hit border town on Wednesday, state media reported, as they prepare for a major peace conference with a government desperate to end insurgencies that have plagued the country.

Myanmar has struggled to contain bouts of deadly religious bloodshed in recent years, with rising Buddhist nationalism posing a steep challenge to the new government.  

Many are still missing and search and rescue operations are underway to clear the soil.

Fresh fighting has broken out between the military and rebel groups in Myanmar's north.
