This initiative will make Kandla a significant contributor to the goal of achieving net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions set by the International Maritime Organization.
Government sources have revealed that a team of intelligence agencies, Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) scientists and customs officials are inspecting suspected equipment on a Karachi-bound merchant vessel that has been found on Gujarat's Kandla port. Customs sources, about the nature of the cargo and reasons for unloading, claimed the Karachi-bound ship bearing Hong Kong flag was detained after some suspicious cargo was found on board.
After receiving intelligence input, the Chinese ship caught at Gujarat's Kandla port, which was going to Pakistan. It is believed that the Chinese ship was loaded with 'missile launching system' for Pakistan. Team of DRDO scientists are sent to inspect the ship.
Firetenders are present at the spot and fire fighting operations are currently underway.
The central government in exercise of powers conferred on it under Indian Ports Act, 1908 made the amendment to replace "Kandla" with "Deendayal", as per a notification issued by the Ministry of Shipping.
The PM said the ports are essential for India's progress.
On the second day of his visit, the Prime Minister will visit Gandhinagar to participate in the opening ceremony of the meetings of the African Development Bank Group.
