The anti-conversion ordinance is for the protection of the right to freedom of religion and prohibition of unlawful conversion from one religion to another by misrepresentation, force, undue influence, coercion, allurement, or by any fraudulent means.
"Our intention behind bringing this bill is to protect SC, ST communities and women," Karnataka Chief Minister Basavraj Bommai said.
The anti-conversion bill was tabled in the Karnataka Legislative Assembly amid stiff opposition from the Congress
Many Christian bodies have opposed the bill, stating that it was against the Constitution
The bill proposes imprisonment of up to 10 years for forced religious conversion
The proposed bill is named 'Karnataka Protection of Right to Freedom of Religion Bill-2021'
The consequences will be stern in case SC/ST and minors are converted
