The election of Stalin as the DMK's second president was fairly a smooth affair as all the 65 district secretaries of the party proposed his name for the top post and his is the only nomination.

He will be the second President of the party, a post which was held by his father Karunanidhi for 49 long years.

Alagiri has launched a revolt against his brother at a time when Stalin is set to be elected as the party president. 

Stalin has been serving DMK as its working president since January 2017 after Karunanidhi's health did not permit him to preside over the affairs of the party.

Alagiri had recently questioned the leadership of DMK working President MK Stalin.

Karunanidhi had expelled Alagiri and his supporters from the party in 2014 for indulging in anti-party activities and making derogatory remarks. 

Stalin asserted he has the support of the entire cadre, just a day after his elder brother MK Alagiri claimed otherwise.

MK Stalin was elevated as DMK working president last January.

The actor said that many leaders, ranging from state Governor Banwarilal Purohit to Congress President Rahul Gandhi, were present during the burial of Karunanidhi at the Marina.

MK Stalin is now the working president of the DMK and looks set to assume its reins.
