Kerala journalist Siddique Kappan was arrested in 2020 while he was going to the Uttar Pradesh town where a Dalit woman died allegedly after being raped. He was accused of trying to instigate violence over the death of the Hathras woman.

Siddique Kappan, along with others was arrested on terror charges on October 5, 2020 by the Uttar Pradesh Police while traveling to Hathras after a Dalit woman's rape and murder.
Yogi Adityanath's police submitted a 5,000-page charge sheet against journalist Kappan in the Mathura court last October.
There, Kappan was charged with abetting terrorism.
It is said that Kappan was in touch with the banned organization SIMI (Student Islamic Movement of India).
The Supreme Court on Monday adjourned for four weeks the hearing on a habeus corpus plea seeking the release of Kerala journalist Sidhique Kappan.
Kappan was arrested at the toll plaza in Uttar Pradesh on his way to Hathras.
A bench of the apex court adjourned the habeus corpus petition filed by the Kerala Union of Working Journalists (KUWJ) for four weeks.
