Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project News

The MOX fuel is produced at the company's mining and chemical combine in the city of Zheleznogorsk in Russia's far eastern region of Siberia.

The unit was shut down early this month due to water and steam leakage.

The second 1,000 MW atomic power unit at the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project (KNPP) that suffered an outage on Monday due to a problem in its steam dump valve is expected to start operations on Friday, said a senior official of Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd (NPCIL).

The road map for cooperation between Russia and India in the sphere of nuclear power provides for the construction of a total of 12 power units in different locations in India.

The plant`s blocks 3 and 4 (the second stage) would be commissioned in 2022 and 2023.  

Ahead of BRICS Summit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Russian President Vladimir Putin in Goa on Saturday.

India and Russia will sign several agreements to enhance defence and nuclear cooperation, including delivery of advanced S-400 surface-to-air missile systems to New Delhi on Saturday.

Talks between India and Russia for setting up units 5 and 6 of the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project (KNPP) are at an advanced stage and a general framework agreement could be announced after talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin on the sidelines of BRICS Summit in Goa, Russian sources here said.

India is in discussions with Russia on the costing for construction of Units 5 and 6 of the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project (KNPP) to be built by Russia`s atomic power corporation Rosatom, parliament was told on Thursday.

According to Power System Operation Corporation Ltd (POSOCO), the Kudankulam nuclear power plant is expected to be connected to the grid on January 24.

India's atomic power company Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd (NPCIL) is likely to restart its first 1,000 MW unit at Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project (KNPP) only in December this year, said a source.
