In a notification, issued late Friday night , the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) announced that the restriction on import of certain category of laptops and computers will come into effect from November 1 onwards.

The impetus behind these upcoming new regulations lies in the country's ambitious goals for digital transformation and economic growth. India is witnessing rapid digitization and cloudification of its economy, leading to an exponential surge in the digital ecosystem.

The announcements come three days after the ban was lifted on Etihad Airways` flights to the United States from Abu Dhabi International Airport.  

Australia is considering following the United States and Britain in banning laptops from inbound airliner cabins, the prime minister said, but declined to explain whether the move was related to an Islamic State group threat that President Donald Trump discussed with Russian diplomats.

"There is a scheduled phone call later today with US Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly and a number of European ministers," Commission spokeswoman Anna-Kaisa Itkonen told a news briefing in Brussels.

The US and UK on Tuesday barred passengers on some international flights from carrying large electronic devices like cameras and laptops as cabin baggage.

Britain tightened airline security on flights from Turkey, the Middle East and North Africa on Tuesday, banning laptops and tablet computers from the plane cabin following a US security warning.
