Greek fifth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas advanced to the fourth round of the French Open on Saturday after his opponent Aljaz Bedene retired with an ankle injury while trailing 6-1, 6-2, 3-1. Tsitsipas hit 28 winners and broke the 56th-ranked Bedene`s serve five times before the 31-year-old decided he could no longer continue. In his fourth round, the Greek will play the winner of the match between Bulgarian 18th seed Grigor Dimitrov and Roberto Carballes Baena of Spain.

The 22-year-old Greek needed over three hours to rally from two sets down and beat little-known Spaniard Jaume Munar in round one. Tsitsipas, who won the season-ending ATP Tour Finals in 2019, came into his second-round match at Roland Garros having defeated Cuevas in straight sets in all three previous meetings. Tsitsipas broke the 34-year-old Cuevas`s serve six times while facing a single break point during his own service games and closed out victory in 88 minutes.

Nadal, looking to equal Roger Federer`s record of 20 Grand Slam men`s singles titles, is used to slow starts at Roland Garros and this year`s debut was no different. On the revamped court Philippe Chatrier, Nadal converted all of his five break points to set up a meeting with American Mackenzie McDonald. Nadal arrived in Paris with no title on clay under his belt after being beaten by Argentine Diego Schwartzmann in the quarter-finals of the Italian Open.

Top-ranked Novak Djokovic will resume his pursuit of an 18th Grand Slam title when he takes on Sweden`s Mikael Ymer in the first round at the French Open on Tuesda Djokovic had started as a heavy favourite to win the title at the US Open but was disqualified from his fourth-round match against Pablo Carreno Busta after inadvertently striking a line judge in the throat with a ball. Six-times Grand Slam champion John McEnroe said Djokovic had shown strength of character to respond so positively to his New York debacle.

Serena has a total of 23 Grand Slam singles titles--which is the most by any player in the Open Era and the second-most overall behind Margaret Court. Meanwhile, Serena also holds the record of most Grand Slam titles in singles, doubles, and mixed doubles combined among the active tennis players. The competition, revamped this year to feature a 12-finals week to rival the men`s Davis Cup, would from 2021 be known as the Billie Jean King Cup. Billie Jean King, a 12-times Grand Slam singles champion and the founder of the Women`s Tennis Association, said she was 'humbled' to have the competition named after her. This year`s Fed Cup finals, scheduled for Budapest in April, were postponed for a year because of the coronavirus pandemic.
