Malnourishment News

The Indian government has revealed that over 33 lakh children in India are malnourished and more than half of them fall in the severely malnourished category with Maharashtra, Bihar and Gujarat topping the list.

According to UNICEF, due to a lack of access to basic needs, many children are malnourished they must lie in hospital beds. Displaced families said that they do not have sufficient funds to feed their children, reported Tolo News.

According to the National Family Health Survey (NFHS) 4 conducted by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare in 2015-16, 35.7% children under 5 years of age are underweight and 38.4% are stunted.

Stunting, or being too short for one's age, is a chronic condition of undernourishment that often starts before birth, which is a critical time for the development of auditory function.

Jharkhand Chief Minister Raghubar Das has vowed to intensify fight against malnourishment and declared 2018 as "Nirog Bal Varsh".

The education situation has improved in Afghanistan since the collapse of the Taliban regime in 2001.  

“About 37 percent of our under-five children are underweight, 39 percent are stunted (low height-for-age), 21 percent are wasted (low weight-for-height) and 8 percent are severely acutely malnourished,” said the study.

During the year 2015-16, out of the 1,72,902 children enrolled in the NRCs, 92,760 were able to successfully recover from the above mentioned conditions.

The Bombay High Court on Wednesday said Maharashtra's progress and prosperity are pointless when 50 percent of children in the state are malnourished and below the poverty line.

According to the doctors, while David's birth weight was 3 kg, the disease ravaged him, leading to malnourishment and weight loss.  

The report by the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) ranked India 97 among 118 countries.

One in every three people globally is malnourished, and the problem exists in every country, a report said.
