The Maharashtra State Socially and Educationally Backward Bill 2024 received unanimous support in the assembly. Maratha Quota activist Manoj Jarange has refused to end the strike arguing that it did not meet his community's expectation.
Jarange pointed out that the state government has not withdrawn cases against Marathas who participated in the protests for reservation.
The Marathas have been demanding reservation for decades, citing their social and educational backwardness due to agrarian distress and lack of opportunities.

Terming the Supreme Court's decision to strike down the Maharashtra law granting quota to Marathas in admissions and government jobs as unfortunate, Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Wednesday said the legal battle for the reservations to that community will continue till there is 'victory'.

The bench held that no Maratha quota will be granted for jobs and admissions for the session 2020-21 and said that admissions to postgraduate courses in the state will not be altered
Raising the issue through a Zero Hour mention, Rajeev Satav of the Congress said the Supreme Court has referred the issue of quotas for Marathas in jobs and education to a larger bench.
The Central government, he said, had not placed its view when the issue was considered by a three-judge bench.
Sambaji Chhatrapati (BJP) too raised the issue of quota for Marathas.

He said the SC's interim order of staying the implementation of the law is "incomprehensible", adding "Our prayer was for referring the case to a larger bench, how come such an order was passed? Hence, we are a bit concerned"

The Socially and Educationally Backward Classes (SEBC) Act, 2018 was enacted to grant reservation to people of the Maratha community in Maharashtra in jobs and admissions
The Bombay HC, while upholding the law in June last year, had held that 16% reservation was not justifiable and said that the quota should not exceed 12% in employment and 13% in admissions
In July, the top court had decided to look into the Socially and Educationally Backward Classes (SEBC) Act 2018 granting reservation to the Marathas in education and jobs. It had declined to stay the Bombay High Court order upholding the statute with some modifications, which included staying the HC verdict allowing quota with a retrospective effect from 2014.

It may be recalled that a bill was passed in Maharashtra on November 30 last year proposing 16% reservation in education and government jobs for the Marathas.
