Mars 2020 News
Dr Swati Mohan, Guidance, Navigation, and Control Systems Engineering Group Supervisor, NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) talked about her Indian roots, family, and her foray into Aerospace Engineering.
Born in Karnataka, India, Swati moved to the US at a very young age and aspired to be a doctor.
Dr Mohan said that though her organization (JPL) was very diverse, she faced challenges as a woman in a male-dominated STEM (Science, Tech, Engineering, Math) field.
JPL is also developing a new landing technology that will allow the rover to visit sites deemed too risky for Curiosity and shave miles off its journey.
After Pathfinder (1997), the Spirit and Opportunity rovers were designed with 10 cameras each, including on their landers; Mars Science Laboratory's Curiosity rover has 17.
NASA's next nuclear-powered Mars rover, slated to launch in 2020, has started taking shape. The new vehicle will be "smarter" than the previous one on many counts, according to the engineers on the project.
