“The organ shortage is in fact an unmitigated crisis and we've never had a real solution to it,” said Dr. Jayme Locke of the University of Alabama at Birmingham said. Thousands die every year before getting an organ and thousands more never even get added to the list. Animal-to-human transplants, what's called xenotransplantation, have been attempted without success for decades.

The research, published in the journal BMC Cell Biology, has the potential to lead to therapies which could help people age better, without experiencing some of the degenerative effects of getting old.

In the study, published in the journal Science, the researchers removed the virus genes from the pig genome using CRISPR-Cas 9 – a gene editing tool – in live animals. 

The discovery showed that a major cause was a deficiency of a vital molecule known as NAD, which is important for normal development of organs.

It means doctors can compare babies development against what is normal for twins, rather than for single births.

The mini human heart was created by introducing human cells into the matrix of a whole rat heart.

Tests confirmed the compounds halted the virus and stopped it from replicating without damage to host mammalian cells, researchers said.

Affecting more women than men, multiple sclerosis victimizes around 2.5 million people around the world. Typically, people are diagnosed in their 20s and 30s.

When the plant cells are washed away what remains is a framework made primarily of cellulose, a natural substance that is not harmful to people.

This brings them one step closer to actually making this miraculous discovery. 

The surgical procedure was completed at Oxford's John Radcliffe Hospital, during which, Father Beaver said he “felt relaxed”.

The fuller understanding, at the molecular level of cell production leading on from this, may allow the researchers to grow whole organs from somebody's own cells, the findings, published in Nature Genetics, showed.
