Ozil, a key member of the 2014 World Cup-winning side, and teammate Ilkay Gundogan, both of Turkish descent, had to deal with a barrage of criticism at home after they were pictured with Erdogan in London in May and the affair overshadowed their tournament preparation.

Every aspect of the national pastime, and that includes clubs, the top league, the national association (DFB) and the players themselves, has fed off this complacency for years.

Defending champions Germany will face South Korea in the first match for Wednesday at Kazan.
