Flying in and out of Mumbai airport will now face long delays from now till November end as the only runway of the airport will be shut for five hours on regular basis for repair work.

Passengers flying in and out of the nation's financial capital should brace for long delays from Tuesday till the end of November as the only runway of the nation's second busiest airport will be shut for five hours for repair work.

The Bombay High Court on Wednesday asked city-based firm SGI Commex, which claims to have won the auction of Vijay Mallya's luxury jet, to file an affidavit in response to a petition filed by Mumbai International Airport Ltd (MIAL), seeking taxes and hangar charges of Rs 3.95 crore.  

"We have already started the ground work for the airport. We are inviting bids for hill cutting. We believe the airport will be commissioned by 2019," the official said.

The GVK Group-run Mumbai International Airport (MIAL), which is among those shortlisted to build the airport in neighbouring Navi Mumbai, today said there is a need for regulatory clarity.

Mumbai Airport Tuesday asked budget carrier SpiceJet to immediately clear its dues amounting to Rs five crore and provide bank guarantee of Rs 15 crore, an issue the airline claimed has been "sorted out".

Government auditor CAG Friday pilloried the public-private partnership (PPP) model for the Mumbai airport, saying risks had not been properly transferred to the private party as the project cost doubled and the funding gap was filled up by passengers through development fee.
