Gary Stead is considered as one of New Zealand's greatest coaches, having steered the men's team to the inaugural World Test Championship title in 2021, and to an unprecedented 3-0 Test series sweep of India on the sub-continent last year. 

The 2016 and 2018 PSL champions are understood to have been in discussions for some time, with Islamabad United targeting Mike Hesson as their first choice.

Bobat and RCB head coach Andy Flower have previously worked together with England, and now, coming together once again, they will look to recreate glorious days at RCB.

Bangar and Hesson were not immediately available for reaction about the status of their contract with the RCB.

A day after Glenn Maxwell was retained by RCB on IPL 2023 Retention Day, their Director of Cricket Operations Mike Hesson on Wednesday (November 16) said that star all-rounder Maxwell will be back well before the next edition.

Apart from Shastri, there are two more Indians who have been shortlisted for the post -- former cricketer Lalchand Rajput and Robin Singh.

The World Cup-winning India off-spinner has so far taken 16 wickets from 10 IPL matches.  

Virat Kohli-led RCB have lost six matches on the trot and are placed at the bottom of the points table.
