Urban telephone subscription increased from 666.11 million at the end of March to 667.19 million at the end of April, and the rural subscription also increased from 534.69 million to 536.65 million during the same period.

The TRAI has also decided to introduce an additional criterion for rejection of the request for allocation of the Unique Porting Code through these amendment regulations.

Draft Telecommunication Mobile Number Portability (Ninth amendment) Regulations, 2023, seeking inputs from the stakeholders have been placed on TRAl’s website (www.trai.gov.in). 

More than 23,000 comments were submitted for the report. 18 percent said porting was "very easy". The survey covers 311 different districts of India.

Under MNP, wireless telephone subscribers can retain their mobile numbers when they relocate from one service area to another.

MNP allows subscribers to retain their mobile number not only within the same Licensed Service Area (LSA) but also pan India in any LSA.

The highest number of MNP requests till date have been received in Karnataka (35.27 million) followed by Andhra Pradesh (30.15 million).

Trai has also asked Aircel not to reject any porting-out request of its subscribers whose activation of mobile number in the "network of Aircel Group is of less than 90 days

Keeping in view upsurge in mobile number portability (MNP) requests, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has decided to slash its rate to Rs 4 per successful porting from Rs 19 earlier.

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) in a statement said that considering the upsurge in the volume of porting requests with effect from July 3, 2015, and the financial results of both the mobile number portability service providers (MNPSPs), the present ceiling of Rs 19 is quite high as compared to cost and volumes of transaction involved.

To curb rejection of mobile number portability requests, telecom regulator Trai on Wednesday proposed to enhance roll of MNP clearing house which will have all the details of subscribers required for completion of the process.

The monthly growth rates of urban and rural subscription were 0.56 per cent and 0.39 per cent, respectively, during the month of June.

Starting Friday, the nationwide mobile number portability (MNP) has become a reality with mobile operators Airtel, Vodafone, Idea and others rolling out the policy that will allow customers to retain their existing numbers across the country while they can change their service provider.
