Monkeypox Virus Outbreak News

In Delhi, the first case of monkeypox was reported on July 24.

Since early May 2022, monkeypox cases have been reported from countries where the disease is not endemic.

The man began to develop a series of symptoms, including fatigue, fever, and a sore throat, nine days after returning from a trip to Spain earlier this year.

Cases in the Americas accounted for 60% of cases in the past month, WHO said, while cases in Europe comprised about 38%. It said infections in the Americas showed “a continuing steep rise.”

Eight cases of the monkeypox disease have been detected in India so far, of which, five have foreign travel history, the Minister of Health and Family Welfare Mansukh Madaviya said.

The 35-year-old who has tested positive for monkeypox disease has no recent history of foreign or local travel, news agency PTI reported.

The 22-year-old man in Kerala died of monkeypox disease on Saturday. The government has isolated 21 people who had come in contact with him.  

Samples of a 22-year-old man, who died in Kerala on July 30, have come out positive for the monkeypox virus. The man had recently returned from the UAE where also his samples had tested positive for the disease, news agency PTI reported.

Russia has confirmed its first case of monkeypox virus. WHO had said monkeybox outbreak does not currently constitute a global public health concern.

US is boosting testing for monkeypox disease. US reported 142 confirmed cases till June 21. So far, 1880 monkeypox cases have been in non-endemic countries.

There are huge gaps in what we know about the monkeypox virus, but combining what we do know with a history of other infectious diseases makes it possible to analyse likely future scenarios.

German panel has recommended vaccines for patients afflicted with monkeypox. Many non-endemic countries have reported monkeypox virus cases this year.

Many of the US cases were caused by the same strain as recent cases in Europe, but a few samples show a different strain, federal health officials said.

In a letter to the directors of the airports in Chennai, Coimbatore, Tiruchi, Salem, Madurai, and Tuticorin, the department said that travellers landing from international destinations with symptoms like fever, headache, muscle ache, or exhaustion. 

The possibility of spread from animals to humans is high. The cause of the disease and the form of the virus is also changing. Most of Europe is also witnessing a rise in cases of the virus.
