A winter storm warning was issued shortly after 11:00 am Saturday and remains in effect until 6:00 am Sunday for portions of Northwest Indiana and Northeast Illinois. 

Brutal winds that fueled southern California wildfires finally began to ease Saturday, giving residents and firefighters hope for a respite as the destructive toll of the blazes came into focus.

"We saw directly the damage to the Guajataca dam," Governor Ricardo Rossello said in a Spanish-language Twitter message on Saturday while reinforcing his request that people leave the area as soon as possible.

"All Areas surrounding the Guajataca River should evacuate NOW. Their lives are in DANGER!," the service said in a tweet. Flooding has already begun downstream, it said.

Hurricane Irma`s eyewall slammed into the lower Florida Keys Sunday, lashing the island chain with fearsome wind gusts.

In Montana, Governor Steve Bullock declared a state of disaster on Friday due to wildfires as dozens raged across tens of thousands of acres during one of the worst fire seasons in state history.

"The fire continues burning in an area above the community of Goleta and crews continue to build containment and contingency lines to hold the fire in check," Cal Fire said on the Inciweb fire-tracking website. 

Fires in the western Canadian province of British Columbia have forced 14,000 people from their homes and disrupted logging and mining operations.

The temperature downtown hit a record high of 98 Fahrenheit degrees (36.6 degrees Celsius), beating the former record of 95 Fahrenheit degrees (35 degrees Celsius) set in 1886, Xinhua news agency cited National Weather Service (NWS) as showing.

A late-season snowstorm swept the mid-Atlantic and northeastern United States on Tuesday, closing public school systems from Washington, DC, to Boston, grounding thousands of airline flights and knocking out electricity to 200,000 customers.

Powerful storms packing heavy rain and snow will lash the US West on Tuesday, a day after thousands of people fled their homes to escape floods, forecasters said. 

Rain-swollen rivers rose across Missouri and Illinois on Wednesday, forcing the evacuation of hundreds of people, closing parts of a major interstate highway and putting scores of buildings underwater after days of unusual winter flooding that has killed 23 people.

 Hurricane Marty was churning in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Mexican resort town Acapulco, causing authorities to shutter schools and send 200,000 students home.
