New spider species News
Two species are named after spider characters from the classic works by J R R Tolkien.
In 2009, the sea along the coastline of Queensland in Australia receded to such an extent that it exposed a population of spiders.
The team was able to identify and formally describe fifteen new species.
Califorctenus cacachilensis is in the same group of spiders (Family Ctenidae) as the notoriously highly venomous Brazilian wandering spider.
The research expedition was conducted on Quinkan country, near Cooktown, which is currently being considered for national heritage listing.
